Thyroid Eye Disease or TED is a condition wherein the eyes are affected due to abnormal thyroid hormone level in the body. Very rarely this condition can occur in the presence of normal blood thyroid levels. In TED the tissues at the back of the eyes and around the eye; become swollen. This makes the eye look bulgy and gives a staring appearance. This condition is popularly termed as the Grave’s disease or the Grave’s Ophthalmopathy. TED is more common in people with hyperactive thyroid disorder. These people tend to sweat more, have uneven heartbeat, unstable blood pressure coupled with fatigue and weight loss. On research, experts have found that thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune condition where the thyroid gland is affected by immune cells which disrupt the regulatory mechanism and there is uninhibited secretion of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. When the tissues of the eyes are affected by the antibodies, the eyes get red and swollen.
Although risk is low, 10% people with TED can have decrease in vision or loss of vision.
Common Symptoms of TED
  • Swelling of eyelids more in mornings and in sunlight
  • Redness, discomfort and watering
  • Double vision especially on prolonged reading
  • Inability to completely close the eyes
  • Decrease or blurring of vision noticed especially when one eye is closed.

Treatment
Thyroid Eye disease is diagnosed by symptoms and eye examination along with blood tests. An eye scan may also be advised depending upon the patient’s condition. The treatment might differ from person to person depending upon their symptoms and vulnerability. It is also a fact that curing or stabilizing thyroid levels in the body may not stop the eye condition from aggravating. Treatment for thyroid eye disease should be undertaken simultaneously but independently. Your ophthalmologist will advise you on steps to be taken for treating Grave’s eye Disease.
Thyroid Eye Disease should be treated on time. If delayed, the complications could extend the recovery time making it uncomfortable for the patient to do his/her daily activities. Once the active stage is over, the residual bulgy eye or squint or lid swelling needs surgical correction. These will not resolve on their own unlike the common belief that bulgy eyes resolve on its own. Normal appearance of the eyes can be restored by minimally invasive advanced keyhole surgeries.
Simple Steps to be taken along with treatment, if diagnosed with TED
  • Head elevation while sleeping
  • Use sun glasses in sunlight
  • Quit smoking
  • Diabetes control
  • Daily vision checks at home by closing one eye at a time so that decreased vision in one eye can be detected early.
  • Look for colour desaturation at home while watching TV by closing one eye.

EFFECTS OF DIABETES ON EYE

EFFECTS OF DIABETES ON EYE

According to the WHO Global Report On Diabetes published in 2016, an estimated 422 million adults around the world are suffering from Diabetes Mellitus.

Diabetes Mellitus, commonly referred to as Diabetes is a chronic disease in which either the pancreas do not produce enough insulin or the cells of the body cannot use the insulin effectively. The carbohydrates in the food are broken down to glucose which is used by the cells in the body for energy. The entry and utilization of glucose by the cells is regulated by insulin.

Since the cells cannot effectively use the glucose, the blood glucose levels rise. High levels of blood glucose can damage tiny blood vessels in the body, especially those in the heart, kidneys nervous system and the eyes.

Symptoms of Diabetes
  • Feeling thirsty frequently
  • The urge to urinate frequently
  • Tiredness
  • Blurring of vision

Effects of Diabetes on Vision

Diabetes, if left untreated results in damage to the retina, which is a thin layer on the back of the eye that sends signal to the brain for perception of vision. High blood sugar levels can induce blurred vision by causing swelling of the lens. diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and glaucoma. Let us discuss each of them briefly below.

Blurred Vision

This may be caused due to fluctuations in blood sugar levels which affects the fluid content of the lens and cornea resulting in change in the refraction.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes damages the blood vessels present in retina causing diabetic retinopathy. The damaged blood vessels leak causing swelling of the retina, or get blocked leading to reduced oxygen supply to the retina, or cause bleeding inside the eye and retina. This is a serious condition and if not treated in time could ultimately cause blindness. Controlling diabetes is essential to the treatment of diabetic retinopathy. You may need LASER treatment or injection or surgery to treat retinopathy. Laser is painless, non-surgical treatment and can be done in the clinic .You can resume your daily activities immediately after LASER.

Cataract

Cataract is clouding of the lens of the eye which can reduce vision. People who are diabetic can develop cataract earlier in life and it may also progress faster than in non diabetics.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma can silently lead to blindness. It is more commonly seen in diabetics and only an eye examination can detect it. Most often, there are no symptoms and the damage starts from the peripheral field of vision which can go unrecognized by the patient. Regular eye examination is a MUST for a diabetic person.

Remedies

It is essential to keep the blood sugar levels under check. Regular physical activity is essential along with the medications to keep the blood sugar levels under control. Specific treatment for each of the complications of diabetes by specialists at the earliest is of utmost importance. Diabetic retinopathy if identified and treated early improves the chances of preserving good vision. Hence a routine checkup of the eyes with an eye specialist is advisable if you are a diabetic.

AN INSIGHT INTO BLEPHAROPLASTY AND WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE

Blepharoplasty is a type of surgery that involves removal of excess skin, muscle and/or  fat from the eyelids. As you age, eyelid skin tends to stretch ,thin out and hang and the muscles that support it may weaken. As a result, fat may protrude and become visible as lumps or bagginess in the upper or lower  eyelid  .These changes may be seen along with  sagging of the eyebrows.

Other than making you look older, the skin sagging around the eye can reduce your peripheral vision or side vision, especially around the upper and outer part in the field of vision. A blepharoplasty can reduce as well as eliminate vision problems, making your eyes appear younger as well as more alert. Let us see whether blepharoplasty is right for you and how you can realistically expect and explore the benefits as well as risks of blepharoplasty.

 Why must it be done?

A blepharoplasty treatment in Chennai can be taken if you have

   Baggy or droopy upper eyelids
Excess skin of the upper eyelids that interferes with your peripheral vision
Excess skin on the lower eyelids
   Bags under your eyes
There are no constraints as such for doing blepharoplasty treatment in Chennai and you can undergo treatment at the same time as another procedure such as a brow lift, facelift or skin resurfacing.

Request an Appointment at DRR eye hospitals

 Are there any risks?

Some of the possible risks that this Oculoplastic treatment in Chennai includes are the following

   Dry or irritated eyes
   Infection and bleeding
   Injury to eye muscles
   Skin discolouration
Difficulty in closing the eye completely
   Temporary blurred vision
Talk to the doctor to know how these surgical risks may apply to you. When you understand what is involved in blepharoplasty and weigh the benefits and risks, you can decide the right option for you. Before you undergo eyelid surgery, you will be undergoing the following

Eye examination: Your surgeon will be asking you questions that are related to previous surgeries, past and current conditions such as dry eyes, glaucoma, allergies, etc. Your tear production and parts of the eyelids will be measured.
Medical history: Your surgeon will ask you questions about previous surgeries and past/current conditions such as allergies, circulatory problems, diabetes etc. Your doctor will ask you about the medicines or supplements that you take.
Vision Examination: Your eye doctor at Eye care hospital in Chennai will examine your vision including peripheral vision. This will also be needed to support an insurance claim. Photographs will be taken of your eyes from different angles to help them plan the surgery, assess the long term and immediate results, support claims etc.
 What happens during the procedure?

A Blepharoplasty is usually done as a day care procedure and the surgeon will first inject some numbing medication into the eyelids after appropriate markings. Surgery on the upper lid involves incision on the crease of the eyelid, removal of excess skin, muscle, fat as required and closure of  the skin cut. On the lower lid, the surgeon makes a cut on the inner side of the eyelid .Then removal or redistribution of excess fat, muscle, and sagging skin is done and the cut is closed . If the upper eyelid margin is droopy, your surgeon will do a Blepharoplasty along with a procedure called Ptosis  correction. Sometimes a brow lift is combined with blepharoplasty.

Many people generally express satisfaction with the results of blepharoplasty, as it gives a more rested and youthful appearance. There may be slight bruising or swelling. Taking proper care can help.
